Traditionally painted Herend porcelain figurines are famous all over the world, but the Herend Grid decoration represents one of the most beloved groups of porcelain figurines for collectors. This type of figurine has been produced since 1860, when the first figurine of a bully cockerel in red mesh was created for a famous author who used the pseudonym Bully cockerel in newspapers. The decoration itself is much older, having appeared on early Chinese porcelain figurines as stylized images of bird feathers and fish scales. The Chinese prototype, like many other decors that came from the Far East, was given a distinct touch by the Herend craftsmen and the result was a decor in a style characteristic only of this manufactory.
